Obituary For Sondra Calvert

Sondra Jo Calvert, age 57, passed away June 25, 2016 due to complications from ALS, Lou Gehrig's disease. She fought this disease with grace, peace, and trust in her God who controls all things. Sondra's favorite Bible verses were Joshua 1:9 and Jeremiah 29:11.

Sondra was born on May 24, 1959 in Brookfield, Missouri to Ronald and Joan (Davolt) Fugate. She trusted Jesus as her Savior when she was eleven. In 1977, she graduated from Brookfield High School. Sondra graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education in 1981, from Northeast Missouri State University (now Truman State). She taught in several schools, including Chillicothe, Lincoln, Sedalia, and Smithton.

On June 25, 1988 Sondra married Paul Calvert, her best friend and love of her life. They were blessed with two sons Benjamin and Isaac. Sondra spent the next twelve years at home raising her boys. Those years were a blessing and privilege to her, and a host of many happy memories. She loved being a wife and mom. Sondra also enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, reading, quilting, and collecting teddy bears.

Sondra went back to teaching in 2003, teaching first grade at Smithton School District. She loved teaching. Her goal each year was to let her students know learning could be fun. She enjoyed the students, parents, and staff at Smithton. Sadly, she had to retire after nine years due to her declining health.

Sondra was a member of Maplewood Church. She sang in the praise team, was involved in small group Bible Study, had taught some ladies Bible studies, and had worked in Awana.

Sondra is survived by her husband, Paul, her two sons, Benjamin and Isaac, her parents, Ron and Joan Fugate, her twin sister, Rholda (Allan) Dahncke, one nephew, Briley, a sister-in-law, Debbie (Jack) Ehrman, several aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents T.K. and Ida Mae Fugate, her maternal grandparents, George and Ethel Davolt, and her in laws, Robert and Agnes Calvert.

Visitation will be 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm, Wednesday, June 29, 2016 at Rea Funeral Chapel, Sedalia.

Funeral services will be held at Maplewood Church, 25396 Hwy O, Sedalia, MO on Thursday, June 30, 2016 at 10:00 am with Dr. Eddie Brown. Pallbearers are John White, Rusty Wedemeyer, Keith Sumner, Dwayne Thomas, Dr. Donald Allcorn, and Jimmy Barnes. Burial will be at Smithton Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Maplewood Church Building program. The family wants to thank Dr. Singh, Sondra's neurologist in Columbia, for his caring and compassionate heart as he cared for Sondra over the years.

Through the years, our Maplewood Church family has supported us in numerous ways. They have provided encouragement, love, met many needs, gave help unselfishly, cried with us, and loved us. Our church has been a testimony to others and has fulfilled the scripture verse, Galatians 6:2. They have helped bear our burdens. Most of all, we are thankful for all the prayer warriors who have lifted our family up as we struggled through this journey. We have been so blessed!
