Roy Alan Bemiss, 66, of Sedalia, Missouri, passed away July 24, 2022, at University Hospital in Columbia, Missouri. He was born on October 16, 1955, in Wellington, Kansas, the son of Robert Paul Bemiss and Hazel Eva (Sherman) Bemiss.
On September 3, 1977, in Sedalia he was united in marriage to Faith Lynn Benson, who resides in the home. To this union were born three children and ten grandchildren.
Growing up in SE Missouri, Roy graduated from Anderson’s McDonald County High School in 1974 where he was a proud, hardworking member of Mr. Mason’s carpentry class. This was a life changing class that would ultimately lead to Roy opening and operating Bemiss Drywall, Inc. for approximately 40 years. After high school graduation, Roy joined the United States military, proudly serving in the United States Air Force through active duty and reserves from 1974-1981. Roy joined the military to see the world but the Air Force sent him to Whiteman Air Force Base near Sedalia, Missouri, where he met Faith and began a new journey as a husband, father and construction business owner/operator. Roy proudly served the Sedalia, Missouri, community and surrounding areas for nearly 40 years, known as “Bemo” in a community where he knew no stranger. As the children grew, the family made many visits “out west” where everyone developed a deep love for the mountains, rock formations and waters of the Rocky Mountains. When the children were grown, Roy and Faith enjoy making numerous trips back to the west once again, hiking through the mountains and trails from Utah to the Dakotas, Colorado through New Mexico and all the states in between. They experienced the beauty and serenity of the Rocky Mountains, photographing and bringing home memories of the place where the entire family dreamed of living one day.
Roy was an auxiliary member of the VFW post No. 2591 in Sedalia, Missouri, and member of New Life United Pentecostal Church in Warrensburg, Missouri. Before Roy became terminally ill in 2019, he enjoyed singing and participating in dramas for the church and community. His last participation was Christmas of 2021, where despite his declining mental and physical abilities, he was still able to portray the Angel Gabriel once again and strongly sing, “Mary, Did You Know?”.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children, Melissa Bemiss Bedwell and Christopher Bemiss, both of Sedalia. He is survived by eight grandchildren, ShiAnn Bedwell, Andrew and Merci Bedwell; Joseph (Joey) Jackson, Annalynn Bemiss, Chayce Bemiss, and Waylon Bemiss, all of Sedalia and Cameron Lipe, of Jefferson City, Missouri; his mother, Hazel Cooper, of Neosho, Missouri; three sisters Sandra Cash of Taft, California, Gloria Stone of Anderson, Missouri, and Judy (Kevin) Gann of Anderson, Missouri; and one brother, Michael (Kathy) Bemiss of Joplin, Missouri. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews who reside in Colorado, Montana, California and Anderson, Missouri as well as several cousins, aunts and uncles.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Paul Bemiss, youngest son, Robert Paul Bemiss and brother-in-law, Dan (Dean) Stone. He will get to meet his two grandchildren who became angels before their birth.
Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, July 30, 2022 at Rea Funeral Chapel with Revs. Michael Jackson and Seth Shaffer officiating.
