Obituary For Oliver James Hughes

Oliver James Hughes, 89, of Sedalia, MO, passed away Wednesday, February 27, 2019 at Bothwell Regional Health Center, Sedalia. He was born on December 2, 1929 in Rural Pettis County south of Smithton, MO, the son of William Oliver and Kathryn Idella (Rodekohr) Hughes, who preceded him in death.

On January 22, 1954 in Kansas City, MO, he was united in marriage to Byrdia Lee Murray, who preceded him in death on October 2, 2012.

He served his country honorably in the US Army during the Korean War. He was a member of Christ & Trinity Lutheran Church and VFW Post 2591.

He is survived by two children, Donna Hughes of Sedalia and Jimmy Hughes (Sandy) of Searcy, AR; two sisters, Anna Marie Wright of Sedalia and Mary Ann Medlin (Ken) of Latham, MO; ten grandchildren; Paul Neel, LaCrista Barnett, Samantha Gamber, Adam Belt, Heather Belt, Anthony Hughes, Chelsea Mills, Brittany Martin, Paul White, and Elizabeth Silverest; twenty-six great grandchildren; and nine great great grandchildren.

Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Deborah Atkinson; two sisters, Maxine Howard and Maggie Mae Thompson; two brothers, Paul Thompson and Jake Thompson; and two great-granddaughters.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 4, 2019 at Christ and Trinity Lutheran Church Sedalia, with Pastor Anne Meredith Kyle officiating.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. Sunday, March 3, 2019 at Rea Funeral Chapel, Sedalia.

Pallbearers will be Paul Neel, Adam Belt, Paul White, Anthony Hughes, Curtis Silverest and Jamie Barnett.

Burial will be at Crown Hill Cemetery with full military honors conducted by the Missouri Army National Guard and Sedalia VFW Post #2591.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Christ & Trinity Lutheran Church in care of the funeral chapel.
