Obituary For Michael Lee Freels

Michael Lee Freels, 54, of Sedalia, MO passed away December 1, 2022, at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, MO. He was born on Jan 3, 1968, in Moberly, MO the son of Roger F. Freels and Jessie B. (Massey) Freels.

Michael grew up and graduated in Madison, MO. He attended college at Northeast Missouri State in Kirksville, MO. He was a die-hard Star Trek fan and had a fascination and appreciation for Outer Space. We believe if he could have gone to space, he would have. One of the highlights of his life was a 2006 family vacation to Cocoa Beach, FL, in which he got to take his children through the NASA museum and witness the Launching of the US Discovery from Cape Canaveral. Apart from Star Trek Michael enjoyed movies of all kinds, from Science-Fiction to Superhero movies, and even the occasional “Rom-Com.” Michael was a self-proclaimed “history buff” and he knew a little something about pretty much everything, which he loved to show off in a good game of Trivia. He was interested in archeology and dinosaurs, much like one of the main characters on one of his all-time favorite shows, Friends. He had even always dreamed of someday going on a dinosaur dig. Additionally, he enjoyed fishing, cooking, playing piano and gardening. Michael was a friend to all and a loving father to his children, including his two dogs, Dot and Dozer.

Michael became a man of many trades over his lifetime, starting from humble beginnings on the family farm he later worked his way through a variety of jobs in the medical field, followed by a few different office jobs before he found his place at Sacred Heart, which became his second home over the 15 years he spent there as the Head of Maintenance, and really everyone’s “go-to-man.” Throughout his time at Sacred Heart in addition to working hard and keeping the school running smoothly, “Mr. Mike” made many dear friends in the faculty and staff, as well as the students and families of the school community.

Michael is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth Freels, Katherine Freels; mother of his children, Debbie Freels; life partner, Sean Burney; five siblings, Alta Nielsen (Bob), James Freels (Michelle), Patricia Freels, Janice Hurt (Todd), Roger Freels Jr. (Tina); many nieces and nephews; his two dogs, Dot, and Dozer.

Michael was many things to me - baby brother, the kid who was still at home when I went off to college and joined the Air Force, and husband to a wonderful wife and father to two beautiful daughters. I will never forget how frightened he was of the Abominable Snowman the first time he watched Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. One of many memories of a cute kid. He was such a sweet baby who grew up to be a kind and gentle man. Love you, Mikey. You will always be in my heart.
