Melbern Lynn Apsher, 82, of Sedalia, MO, passed away at his home on Tuesday, November 28, 2023. He was born on August 1, 1941, in Union, SD, the son of Vern Apsher and Helen (Weeks) Apsher, who preceded him in death.
On December 3, 1961, in Stover, MO, he was united in marriage to Claudine Kay Smith, who resides in the home.
Mel lived in South Dakota until he was ten years old when his dad packed up the family and moved to Ionia, MO. He attended Cole Camp Public School until graduating in 1959. He helped his parents on the farm after graduation and then had the good fortune to marry Kay Smith. Later he went to work for Allied Web as a foreman installing minute man missile bases. This job took him back to South Dakota, then Montana, North Dakota and back to Missouri. Later Mel took a job with Mutual of Omaha selling insurance. In 1976 he had the opportunity to become a real estate broker, and opened his own office with Security Real Estate in Sedalia MO. He later joined with United Country Real Estate. He loved selling farmland and made many new friends during this time. Mel especially enjoyed his grandchildren, gardening, and deer hunting. After retirement, Mel found a lot of joy in raising a variety of beautiful flowers.
In addition to his wife, Melbern is survived by four children, Tim Apsher and wife Nita of Sedalia, Mindy Guinn of Columbia, Mike Wood and wife Kim of Utah, and Chris Apsher and wife Kelly of Clinton; ten grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Betty Houseworth of Warrensburg, and Donna Sample and husband George of Warrensburg; one aunt, Irene Welliver of Amoret, MO; and many nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, Melbern was preceded in death by a brother, Alvin Apsher.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 2, 2023, at Rea Funeral Chapel, with Pastor Eddie Brown officiating.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the chapel.
The entombment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, Sedalia, MO.
Pallbearers will be Steven Moore, Adam Guinn, Dirk Apsher, Dane Apsher, Drew Apsher, and Charles Hoff.
Honorary bearers will be Steve Lietzow, George Sample, Jake Piester, Sam Byler, and J.D. Byler.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in the care of Rea Funeral Chapel.
