Mary Joan Wiechen, 90, of Sedalia, MO, passed away on Thursday, August 1, 2024, at E.W. Thompson in Sedalia. She was born on June 12, 1934, in Sedalia, the daughter of Mason Riley and Marguerite (Lutjen) Riley, who preceded her in death.
On January 1, 1954, in Flat Creek Baptist Church, she was united in marriage to Charles E. Wiechen, who preceded her in death on March 19, 2012.
Mary graduated from Smithton High School in 1952 and received her Bachelor's degree in education from Central Missouri State Teachers College in Warrensburg, MO. She started her first year of teaching as a first-grade teacher at Smithton School. She later taught in the Sedalia School District at Mark-Twain Elementary School and retired from teaching while at Heber Hunt Elementary School. Mary was a member of the First Baptist Church of Sedalia, where she taught Sunday school for many years.
Mary was an avid reader and especially enjoyed reading her Bible.
Survivors include a son, Paul Wiechen of Sedalia; a sister, Ruth Dillingham of Warrensburg; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mary was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Canfield, and a brother, William Riley.
Graveside services and burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 5, 2024, at Highland Sacred Gardens Cemetery, with Pastor Jeremiah Greever officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Open Door Ministries in the care of Rea Funeral Chapel.
