Margaret June (Hyatt) McMullin passed away July 27, 2024, at age eighty-five, at St. Joseph Place in Kansas City, after a prolonged neuromuscular disease. She was born on May 14, 1939, in Sedalia, MO, to N.B. (Buster) and Edythe Hyatt.
She married Everett McMullin on March 28, 1981, and he survives. She is also survived by her son, Anthony Craig Nichols and his wife Nancy of south Kansas City; sisters, JoAnn Blaylock of Columbia, MO, and Sue Carolyn Osborne of Panorah, IA; a brother, Robert Hyatt and his wife Therese of Chesterfield, MO, and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers-in-law, Jack Blaylock and James Perry Osborne, and her beloved dog, Maxwell.
As she was known to many, Meg graduated from Smithton High School in Smithton, MO, and attended Central Missouri State College (now Central Missouri University) in Warrensburg. She had a thirty-four-year career in the Mid-Continent Library System in Kansas City, from April 1968 until her retirement in April 2002.
Meg was a friend of many and a sweet person to most. She was a cook who felt that presentation and color were the most important parts of food preparation. She was the bargain hunter we all strive to be. She excelled at keeping a tidy and dust-free home - and other homes if necessary! Everything had its place.
Meg loved life, but she could be stubborn, and it could be challenging to change her mind. She was painfully honest about herself and others. It could be difficult to find gray areas in some judgments, but some appreciated that. But Meg was the kind of friend you would want to have. Her seemingly constant smile could light up her face and a room, and it was sorely missed her last few weeks. She was always busy. She would be the first one to start cleaning up after family Christmas. Meg loved birds, feeding them constantly with Everett. They also shared a significant interest in country music, gospel music, and especially the music of the Gaither family. She had a special like for Winstead's hamburgers and fountain sodas. Several family members remember Meg as the one they wanted to be around - at least after she out-grew the fit-throwing stage!
Meg's illness was devastating to her and her family. She was able to be less and less active and severely limited in her muscle strength, being less able to do all the things she liked. She maintained her mental capacities and sense of humor until near the end.
Meg would probably say she was most proud of how she cared for her home. Those who miss her would be most proud of the trust we could place in her as a friend. She will be sorely missed.
