Obituary For John S. Harvey

John Stephen Harvey Jr., 87, of Marshall, MO, formerly of Green Ridge MO, passed away Sunday August 16, 2015 at The Arbors at Westport Estate in Marshall MO, from complications associated with Alzheimer's. He was born on March 4, 1928 at home in Hughesville MO, the son of John Stephen Harvey Sr. and Alpha Nadine (Bratton) Harvey.

On September 18, 1949 at First Christian Church, Sedalia he was united in marriage to Beverly Ann Haggard, who survives of the home.

Mr. Harvey graduated from Smith-Cotton High School in 1945. Having skipped two grades in the country school system, John wasn't old enough to drive when he went off to college. He attended the University of Missouri briefly until his fathers illness called him back to Sedalia. The majority of his lifetime, his career was with Harvey Brothers Implement Company of Sedalia, which was originally started by John, Sr. and his brother, Paul Harvey. The company was then passed down to John Jr. and his two brothers, thus retaining the name Harvey Brothers. Mr. Harvey was a long-time member of First Christian Church, Sedalia where he taught Sunday School, served as Deacon, and sat on several vital committees. He was also a 32nd degree Mason and was honored with a 50 yr membership in 2001. He served on the Green Ridge School Board, was Mayor of Green Ridge for one term, was a member of Order of De Molay, and served on the Reed Center Board.

Besides his wife of almost 66 yrs, he is survived by four daughters, Linda Reed (George) of Plainview, TX, Julia Ray of Sedalia, Leslie Broaddus (Bill) of Green Ridge, and Joan Almaguer of Normal IL; one brother, Vernon Harvey of Sedalia; four sisters-in law; nine grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, and three step grandchildren. Of particular endearment, John had "double cousins", meaning that his father and uncle married his mother and her sister. They spent the Depression years all living together, so they were and are a very close knit family. Other cousins also remained in contact by getting together once a month to eat out and catch up. Family was very important to John. He had a very special place in his heart for his nieces and nephews, and they knew it. He is also survived by his beloved Yorkie, Pandy.

Besides his parents he is preceded in death by one brother, Marvin Harvey, and some of his beloved cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 pm on Tuesday August 18th, 2015 at Rea Funeral Chapel Sedalia with Rev. Chad McMullin officiating.

Visitation will begin at noon at the chapel, prior to service. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, Sedalia.

Pallbearers will be grandsons. Honorary bearers will be Otis Thomas and George Whitman.
