James R. DeMotte

June 28, 1941 — January 16, 2025

James Robert DeMotte, 83, of LaMonte, MO, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 16, 2025, at the Sylvia G. Thompson Residence Center in Sedalia.

Born on June 28, 1941, in Hydro, OK, James was the son of Henry and Dortha (Upchurch) DeMotte, both of whom preceded him in death. On September 22, 1961, he married Mary Elizabeth Farris in LaMonte, MO, and they shared a loving life together. Mary Beth survives him, along with their children, Sheryl (Wes) Lazenby and Bobby (Jeri) DeMotte, both of LaMonte, MO.

James was a devoted grandfather to Bryant Lazenby, Blaire Riley (Jacob), Clayton DeMotte, and Vada Johnson (Seth), and great-grandfather to Kimberlynn and Bowen Riley. He is also survived by his sister, Kay Pummill of Knob Noster, MO; niece Karen Seward (Jim) and their children Josh, Jordan, and Jesselyn; nephew John Pummill (Carrie) and their children Colten and Mallory. He was preceded in death by his half-brother Otis DeMotte, but is remembered by his children, Dr. Jeanne DeMotte (Richmond, MO) and Barbara Steiner (Weatherford, OK).

A proud graduate of LaMonte R-IV Class of 1960, James spent 20 years working for the Missouri State Highway Department before transitioning to a career as a rural mail carrier with the United States Postal Service, a role in which he took great pride. He was also a farmer, finding joy in both his land and the people he encountered during his daily mail route.

James was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Sedalia. He was known for his kindness, generosity, and willingness to help those in need. A devoted mentor, he spent many years as a 4-H leader, teaching woodworking skills to young people in the community. James had a deep love for country music, often enjoying it with friends and family while dancing at the Sedalia Moose Lodge.

In accordance with James' wishes, there will be no formal services. Memorial contributions may be made to the Dresden Cemetery, in care of Rea Funeral Chapel.

James will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him for his gentle spirit, his love of life, and his unwavering devotion to his loved ones.
