James Dennis Culbertson, 77, of Sedalia, passed away on Saturday, December 21, 2024, at his home in Sedalia. He was born on July 31, 1947, on the family farm near Humansville, MO, the son of Hiram Eugene Culbertson and Lucille Mae (Comstock) Culbertson, who preceded him in death.
He lived on the farm near Humansville for the first 10 years of his life; then the family moved to a farm near Appleton City, MO, where he graduated from Appleton High School.
James had a diverse career, working in various roles from truck driver to farmer, to Tyson Foods and Walmart. He retired as a small engine repairman. In the early 2000s, he found a new passion in garden tractor pulls, building several different tractors and winning many pulling events. His love for the outdoors, his fondness for friends and family, and his affection for his cat were all part of his rich and varied life.
Jim's legacy lives on through his surviving family members, a testament to the strong bond they shared. He is survived by his sister, Betty LaRue Durham of Humansville; his brother, Edward Denton Culbertson and wife Deby of Plattsburg, MO; his companion and caregiver, Lesa Knox of Sedalia; his sister-in-law, Claudia Culbertson of Trimble, MO; his nephews, Rick Durham and Randy Durham, Gary Lee Brubeck, Jerry Culbertson, Johnny Culbertson, Edward Culbertson II, and Chad Culbertson; and his niece, Judith Ann Puls of Blue Springs, MO.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Kenneth Eugene, Clifton Lee, Jerold Russell, and Cliffard Wayne; one sister, ArmaLee Brubeck; one daughter, Michelle Janae, and one niece, Sherry Mae Culbertson.
A celebration of James's life will be held, providing an opportunity for family and friends to come together and share their memories. The gathering will take place from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at Rea Funeral Chapel.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or Shriner's Hospital for Children in the care of Rea Funeral Chapel.
