Obituary For Gladys Mae Washington

Mother Gladys Mae Washington, 100, of Marshall, MO, formerly of Sedalia, departed this life on Tuesday, May 26, 2020 at University Missouri Hospital, Columbia. She was born on November 12, 1919 in Sedalia, MO the daughter of Allison and Virginia (President ) Hinkle, who have preceded her in death.

She married James Allen in 1940 and later married Vice Bishop John S. Washington on December 18, 1970.

She attended Lincoln High School in Sedalia, MO. Gladys loved fishing, gardening and traveling. Gladys was a faithful member of Burns Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. She served on the Mother Board, past President of the Usher Board, member of the Senior Choir, Circle No. 1 and The Red White and Blue Club. Gladys also served as President of the Mission Auxillary, President of the Church Extension Department of the Western MO Annual Conference and a member of the Trustee Board of the Western Mo Annual Conference. She was a member of the Ministers Wives Conference of the Western MO Annual. Gladys was instrumental in organizing several singing groups and reorganized the Senior choir of Mt. Calvary Free Will Baptist Church in Marshall, MO. She was also a member of the Royal Lauretta Court of Cyrene #15, and former Worthy Matron, Special Deputy Grand Worthy Matron and served as secretary for many years of The Gertrude Madison #105 order of the Eastern Star. Gladys worked and retired from the MO State school in Marshall, MO.

She leaves to cherish her memory, a daughter, Helen Jean Shirley of Meridian, MS; a son, John L. Washington of Kansas City, MO; a granddaughter, Enola Jackson of Blaine, MN; a grandson, Kenton Edward Shirley and his wife Melinda of Meridian, MS; great grandchildren, Kenton Durell Shirley, Cory Buckingham, Damon Shirley, and Gladys Payton; a God-daughter, Marilyn Morris and her husband Ray of Kansas City, MO; special friends, Belva Morney, Betty Johnson, Wilene Sims, Elder V.J. Council, "mail lady" Edie Miller, Teressa Jacques and many more friends and relatives.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Ernest and Earl Hinkle; a sister, Hazel Hubbard; a grandson, Desmond Shirley; a son-in-law, Edward Shirley; a brother-in-law, Earl Washington; and Steffon Shirley.

Funeral service will be 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 9, 2020 at Burns Chapel Freewill Baptist Church with Bishop Paul Jones officiating.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the Church.

Burial will be at Crown Hill Cemetery, Sedalia.

Pallbearer will be Stephen Boggs, Leon Williams, and Clayton Wright.
