George "Dub" Meyer

Steven George Willard “Dub” Meyer, 87, of Mora, Missouri, passed away Monday, July 22, 2013 at Katy Manor, Pilot Grove. He was born March 19, 1926 in Gladstone City, Missouri, which is now covered by the Lake of the Ozarks and is known as Gladstone Cove. He was a son of Harry and Fannie (Stevens) Meyer.

On December 25, 1944, in Smithton, he was united in marriage to Darlene Ulmer, who preceded him in death on November 14, 2002

Dub moved east of Versailles with his family in 1928 where he attended Sunnyside Grade School. In 1940, the family moved to Hughesville, where he attended high school. Dub loved the land and farmed all of his life. After marrying Darlene, the two farmed together in Hughesville and Marshall. Dub and Darlene moved to the Lake Creek area in 1953 when he purchased a farm. Dub excelled in all aspects of the agriculture industry from raising livestock to his row crop operation. He handled all business matters in an honorable manner and was truly respected by his peers. His humble demeanor showed how thankful he was for the way he and his family had been blessed. Dub was quick to lend a helping hand and always knew when to also offer a smile to those who needed one. Dub cared about his community and was very involved in making it a better place to live. He was a member of Lake Creek Methodist Church, Smithton, where he also served on the board and was a two-term treasurer. He served on the FSA Committee of Pettis County for thirty six years. Dub was on the Smithton School Board for six years and served as secretary of the board for three years. During his time on the board the new grade school in Smithton was built. Along with his years of service to his community and the farming way of life, he and Darlene and their children simply enjoyed spending time with many families in the community.

Dub enjoyed his life and was a happy man. His favorite things included visiting, laughing, teasing, keeping up with the farm business, checking the cattle, and telling stories of earlier times. He had a world full of friends and it was a joy to observe these friendships at all events, including the fish frys that he always looked forward to. Most recently, it was neat to hear Dub say "I enjoyed my grandkids, but I really enjoy my great grandkids." They too enjoyed their time with him. He would tell them stories of his childhood and they learned many life lessons from him. They knew if they had a question he would have the answer. Dub loved to make his great grandkids laugh and act silly and, according to him, the louder they got, the better! He especially loved it when they entertained him with songs and dances. He asked that they call him "Dub" instead of granddad to make it easy for them. They always got bubble gum from "Dub" when they saw him, in exchange for the best gifts they could give him, a hug and "I love you".

He is survived by one son, Jerry Meyer and his fiancé Susan Lemler of Sedalia; two daughters, Linda Monsees and her husband Dale of Smithton, Colleen Deuschle and her husband Stanley of Pilot Grove; three sisters-in-law, Louise Meyer of Phoenix, Arizona, Harriet Meyer of Hughesville, Karen Wagor of Kansas; five grandchildren, Shelly Meyer, Steven Deuschle, Tracy Monsees, Lisa Pyle, Brandon Meyer; eight great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard Meyer and Doyle Meyer.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 26, 2013, at Rea Funeral Chapel, Sedalia, with Pastors Gary Richardson and Jason Veale officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park, Sedalia.

Pallbearers will be Steve Deuschle, Tracy Monsees, Brandon Meyer, Alan Meyer, Chris Pyle, and Trevor Monsees.

Honorary bearers will be John and Barbara Knaus, Emmett and Alice Fairfax, Lois Hoehns, Les Zimmerschied, Geneva Hampy, Carl Wiseman, and Mark Hoehns.

The family will receive friends at the funeral chapel Thursday, July 25, 2013 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
