Gary Edward Griffin, 86, of Sedalia, passed away on November 16, 2024, at Centerpoint Medical Center in Independence, MO.
Gary was born on December 31, 1937, in Kansas City, MO, to Claude and Blanche (Miller) Griffin, who preceded him in death.
Gary was married to Patricia Holmes, and his son from that union, Vincent Griffin (Lori) of Camdenton, MO, survives.
On June 20, 1980, Gary was united in marriage to Marjorie Wimer Griffin, who survives in the home.
Upon graduation from Central High School in Kansas City, MO, Gary enlisted in the US Army. The friends he made while serving in Germany remained in his circle throughout the years, and they enjoyed many reunions in Branson, MO.
A man of many talents, skills, and interests, Gary was known by many of his closest friends as "The Professor." His knowledge and experience in a wide array of disciplines was often called upon by those needing assistance of one kind or another.
Following his Army enlistment, Gary began a career with Manor Bakery in Kansas City, followed by a job with Cake Box Bakery as a decorator, eventually becoming Sales Manager. When in-store bakeries became the norm, the Cake Box era ended.
Following his marriage to Margi, Gary became a licensed plumber for several years before becoming an apprentice electrician.
Gary closed out his career with the Kansas City, MO Water Department, working his way from meter reader and retiring as Supervisor of the Meter Department while overseeing the implementation of computerization.
A great cook, Gary's many hobbies included racing top-fuel funny cars, earning his pilot's license, and flying experimental and aerobatic aircraft. His favorite was a purple and white open-cockpit Pitts Special Bi-plane.
Gary enjoyed trips to the King Biscuit Blues Festival in Helena, AR, sipping a little bourbon while lounging on the levee and listening to the blues. He also built and flew r/c airplanes, bowled, golfed, roller & ice skated, water skied, and enjoyed shooting trap at the Sedalia Rod & Gun Club, where he was a board member, serving a term as Board President. Gary shot 39 of 50 on the Wednesday before his passing.
Gary also leaves behind Jimmi, the Tuxedo Cat, who was always by his side, as well as many friends.
