Donald Ray Merk, 75, of Smithton, MO, passed away at Fair View Nursing Home in Sedalia on Saturday, August 17, 2024. He was born on July 19, 1949, in Sedalia, the son of Cloyd R. Merk and Bonnie F. (Hoehns) Merk, who preceded him in death.
He was previously married to Elizabeth Smith for 20 years, who currently resides in Sedalia. On June 11, 1992, in Smithton, MO, he was united in marriage to Janice L. Gilmer, who preceded him in death on January 18, 2023.
Don graduated from Smithton High School in 1967 and briefly attended Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg. He had a successful career in construction and owned and operated Merk Construction in Sedalia for many years.
Don loved spending time outdoors, especially in his workshop, where he enjoyed woodworking, making furniture, and repairing items for family and friends. He had a passion for animals, particularly dogs, and would often give treats to his neighbors' dogs as they walked by.
Survivors include three daughters, Shannon Hagedorn (Travis) of Sedalia, Tracy Rohan (Chris) of Wauconda, IL, and Jodie Hurt (Doug) of Kansas City, KS; five grandchildren, Braedyn, Kaylee, Brittany, Zack, and Samantha.
In addition to his wife and parents, Donald was preceded in death by a son, Jonathan Merk, and a brother, Dennis Merk.
Memorial contributions may be made to the National Ataxia Foundation in the care of Rea Funeral Chapel.
Cremation arrangements are in the care of Rea Funeral Chapel.
