Carl “Rusty” James Sumey, 65, of Sedalia passed away Thursday, April 24, 2014 at Boone Hospital, Columbia. He was born on September 21, 1948 in Independence, MO., a son of James and Gertrude (Rose) Sumey.
He was united in marriage to Kaye Mills, who survives of the home.
As a young boy he was involved with the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts of America. Rusty made the rank of Eagle Scout and every year was able to attend scout camp at Osceola, Mo. He earned his ranks in the Mic-O-Say Tribe. The Tribe of Mic-O-Say is the Honor Camping Society of Camp Geiger, Pony Express Council, Boy Scouts of America. His name was “Distant Setting – Scarlet Sun.
As Rusty grew he was active in many sports including track, football, baseball, basketball earning his letter. Rusty also practiced Martial Arts. He had his own Martial Arts school for a time.
Rusty was a member of the Moose Lodge, 1494, member of the Moose Legion, The Patriot Guard and American Legion Post 642. He was an avid motorcycle rider, an officer with the Moose Riders and participated in a lot of volunteer work. Rusty served his country honorably in the US Air Force during Vietnam.
Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by two children, Jennifer and Tracey; one stepdaughter, Yvonne Clark of Minot, ND; one sister, Coralie Strange of Edwards, MO; four grandsons and one granddaughter.
Besides his father, he was preceded in death by a sister, Sandra Kay.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 3:30 pm, Sunday, May 4, 2014 at The Moose Lodge 1494, Sedalia.
In lieu of flowers Memorial contributions are requested to be made to the Moose Lodge and can be left at the Moose Lodge or donations for Rescued animals can be sent to:
