Betty Jean Overton, 80, of Sedalia, was called home on Tuesday, October 9, 2018 at Bothwell Regional Health Center in Sedalia. She was born on December 2, 1937 in Sedalia, MO, the daughter of Walker Murphy and Ruth Marie Washington, who preceded her in death.
On June 16, 1962 she was united in marriage to Walter M. Overton Jr., who preceded her in death on September 4, 1994.
Betty was member of Quinn Chapel A.M.E. Church, Sedalia. She worked as an educator for the Sedalia #200 School District for many years. Betty was strong in her faith and loved The Lord. She enjoyed family, fishing, traveling, sports, and game shows. She was also an avid bowler and Kansas City Chiefs fan.
Survivors include three children, Kevin Reader (Diana) of Sedalia, Carla Jeffries (Curtis) of York, PA., and Steven W. Overton of Columbus, OH; fourteen grandchildren, Carldaniel Washington, Vandisha Hicks, Tevin Lindsay, Nicholas Shipley, Krystal Shipley, Anthony Carter, Jasmine Bratton, Sheridan Bratton, Curtis Jeffries III, Ian Dotson, Steona Overton, Carlese Overton, Paige Overton, and JaKobe Overton; and sixteen great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by two brothers, William D. Washington and Cleo W. Washington; a sister, Ophelia Riley.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 13, 2018 at Taylor Chapel UMC with Pastor Calvin Pritchard officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday, October 12, 2018 at Rea Funeral Chapel, Sedalia.
Burial will be at Crown Hill Cemetery, Sedalia.
Pallbearers will be Tony Booker, Andy Lindsey, Troy Maupins, Tony Poindexter, Nicholas Shipley, and Dennis Spear.
